| I wish the venomous ones would stay away from the house Found this juvenile Eastern Brown snake just under one of the kids bedroom windows... it dropped off the window sill when it spotted us. It wasn't very active though as it's mouth was full... of a frog I don't really like having the second most toxic land snake in the world so close to the house. This one is only a baby about 30cm long... where's Mum and Dad?? At least this one wasn't inside the house like the last brown we had was. | |

| No... it is illegal to kill snakes. As it was only a baby and was occupied by the frog, we put it into a large bucket (with lid) using a long handle spade and took it right over the back of the paddock away from the house... it will probably find its way back but I hope not.
If it was any bigger or more active we wouldn't have gone anywhere near it.

| The carpet python, green tree snakes, keelbacks are welcome here, I don't even mind the mildly venomous yellow faced whip snake. Even the red belly blacks we have seen near the dam are ok as they are not aggressive but we don't want the eastern browns around here | |

| And the bad news is that Browns hang around once they have found a food source. The reason they bite so many people is that they're the snake most commonly found near houses and other buildings. We have some huge Browns around here because they are safe over in the forest and free to grow to an old age. | |

| How terrifying for both of you Gail and Betty. I have heard of people dying before they could get to a hospital and anti-venom.
I worry here but we only have red bellied blacks and I think the occasional tiger and a lot of small black snakes many of whom live in a neglected dam in the paddock next to me. But I keep the lawns around the house mowed and the lady who is managing the property next door mows a wide strip down the boundary line also. My worry is I have a lot of city kids here and also city dogs.
I think snakes are beautiful animals - I can still remember standing quietly in front of my chook house marvelling at the beautiful red belly snake stretched out in the morning sun and it was so beautiful I thought it must be not real. As soon as I moved it scurried away into the veggie garden and I took some photos but it left never so far to return.

| I think we'd all be surprised at how many snakes would be around all our houses... just lucky that they are shy and retreat before we even know that they are there. Eastern Browns are one snake that are often encountered in cities and will enter houses after food. Pamela, you can still have these at your place... as far south as SA http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/features/snakes/snakedetail.asp?TaxName=Pseudonaja+textilis
What did this guy think he was doing? He's lucky it wasn't a brown. http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,25207421-3102,00.html

| What little I saw of Steve Irwin, I did think he had a death wish. If that other man however had tried to shift a dog that had been run over he'd have been bitten too, so why didn't he think the snake would do the same?
I thought this was interesting, Gail. Notes: potentially dangerous; apply first aid and seek urgent medical attention for all suspected bites; responsible for many human deaths. pugnacious; rears up in distinctive "S" shape and strikes repeatedly, if provoked.
We've provoked a few here and have only had one aggro Brown, yet I almost got bitten by a Copperhead that had reared up behind me to strike. I was backing out from under a loft at a stud farm, pulling a hose, got to the path along the front of the main stable block and turned to see where to put my foot and there he was. Just took a big step away, dropped the hose and fortunately he was so fascinated he stayed there watching the water till he was dispatched to Snake Heaven. So, instant aggression without provocation, whereas I have stepped over a Red Bellied Black after I saw the Afghan Hound I was walking step over it, and it just slid away. Mind you, I picked up a bale of straw at that stud without realising there was a snake coiled up between the two pieces of twine on it. A copperhead again, but thank God, not aggro that time. I just gently put it down. LOL. I'm not scared of them, Pamela, and I also think they are beautiful, but you won't get a snake catcher here, there'd be no point anyway as there are just so many snakes about, and it's only if they settle in that we have to get rid of them. Too dangerous for our animals otherwise, and us. Ian's had one on face level in one of the sheds, up on top of the nets we use for our fruit trees.

| When we had a small brown in the house we realised straight away that it was a brown as it reared up in the classis "S" shape - it is the easiest way to ID them as even though other snakes will rear up they don't have that S shape before they strike, the neck also flattens out. I read somewhere that the cobra is the only other one that does it. Red bellies are very quiet... luckily... my son stood on one once. He was half running down a hill and didn't see the snake until to late. At least the momentum kept him going and luckily the snake went the other way... my son came back to the house as white as a sheet... he doesn't run down hills anymore | |

For those who haven't seen it , the sign of a cranky Brown snake, the dreaded s bend.

| The S shape is usually seen when rearing up like on this page http://www.wildlifemountain.com/brownsnake.htm | |
