Did a dash to town yesterday so as not to miss having first pick of the first bare rooted roses for the season. Came home with 3 David Austin's, (Happy Child, William Shakespeare 2000 and Graham Thomas), also Mister Lincoln, and for the trellis outside the kitchen window, Pierre de Ronsard. The next lot of roses should hopefully be in by the next time I have to shop.

I was hoping that I would be seeing the Victorian roses by now..

Are they blooming yet girls or has it been to cold or is it too early

Not much in my garden today..

Only a full blown Julia's Rose

And an ageing Brass Band all taken with the wrong lens

I volunteer at the local museum which has a lot of roses in the garden. I don't know much about roses, and was talking to another volunteer yesterday about what plants to put into the beds and she mentioned that she thought she had heard that roses didn't like a lot of competition. Is that correct and if so, what can be planted under them? I have ordered some Pansies and am about to order some bulbs, will they be OK, and can I plant things like geraniums/daisy type things?

As you can see below, this rose, St Patrick, has produced thin stemmed heavy roses that droop. I am wondering is this because it is just a young rose? Or is this going to be the norm for it? Could there be something wrong with the soil? Am I not fertilising it correctly? Seems such a shame when, if you pick it up and look at it, it's a beautiful rose. Might it not be getting enough water?

Would putting them under callistemons be enough to protect them, or should they come in under the gazebo perhaps, or the eaves of the house? The latter might certainly be not good enough.

Any ideas on other ways to start them off will be appreciated as I hope to get more cuttings and ...

Mornington Rose Gardens

I had a lovely day out with the club today and we visited the Mornington Community Rose Garden. It was built and is maintained by volunteers. I was astounded by the quality of these roses, they were all bursting with health and full of blooms. 230 varieties of roses and about 2,500 plants. What a glorious place for rose nuts like me!

I took some pics, but couldn't remember the names of all the roses.

Here's a few,
