PostSubject: Wasp Nest gone at last   Fri Apr 03, 2009 4:00 am

At last we can walk down our driveway and the kids can ride their bikes on it again without suffering heaps of stings as the wasp nest is now gone. As they were an aggressive wasp and we couldn't walk near them, every time we drove past the nest I would stick my arm out the window and give it a spray. It took a while but eventually all the wasps are gone and we took the nest down a couple of days ago. The wasps were a paper wasp, Ropalidia romandi - info here - 2nd page bottom left http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/inquiry/factsheets/paper_wasps_20080709.pdf

For those that didn't see the original post about it, the nest was on a power pole next to our driveway

This is the nest after we took it down... it was about 40cm long. The outside...

... and inside

A couple of baby wasps

Yes they are the same as I had here but only a tiny nest in two of my roses. And sooooo aggressive as you said. I became scared to walk near those roses so got rid of them also by suiting up and chopping much of the rose and nest away and throwing into the back of my ute and driving off with them. What did you spray with? Would have been easier.

There was a lot of work in that nest and it was a shame to have to destroy it but safety of the kids come first... even the dog got some stings. There would have been 1000s of wasps working the nest.

Pamela, I just bought a bottle of exterior surface spray as it was the only thing that had a long enough reach to spray the nest so we didn't have to get too close... it sprays out about 3m. I don't know what I will do with the rest of the bottle... there are a heap of spiders and cobwebs around the eaves of the house but I don't like spraying them because the frogs are often around there and willy wagtails use the cobwebs in there nests.

That's a good idea using that surface spray Gail, also doing that sort of thing at night is a bit safer as well.

I was talking to a bee keeper the other day and he was saying that he was called in to kill a German wasp nest that was over two meters tall

Jenny, I've seen bigger ones than these but they are usually high up on tree branches and don't cause any problems. This one was more than big enough when it was so low Sad

Richard that was a decent sized nest... 2m!! bet there was a few wasps on that one affraid
