PostSubject: Does this look ok?   Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:52 pm

I've cut a section of lawn out and this is a new bed Im making, but I'm trying to work out where to put these rocks.
Does this look ok? because I've been shifting these heavy things back and forth for over a day now trying to get them in the right spot before I dig them in. I hate trying to do things like this 'cause it drive me nuts! what do you think? or are they still not right :bounce:

side view from my back steps:

I cant get a front on photo 'cause the frangipanis are in the way, but I guess you wont see them from that angle anyway behind the frangis

I had a ps in here for tessa but I lost it LOL, tessa I have a typo in my name, can you get rid of the "g" on the end?

No Ota ... It does not look right please do not take offence things like that look better grouped together in threes and fives or bigger sizes, one on its own just not right either is three separate ones

thanks thee, I got those pots for nothing at tip recycling and the old laundry tub was here when we moved in so I gave them a makeover Very Happy

medbury I only have these three matching ones (there were a heap of rocks here when we moved in, mostly granite but I had these three other ones which I wanted to use up) but there arent any large ones only small ones like these Crying or Very sad

no offence taken MA, this is the kind of advice I was looking for. I tried to put the three together in the middle of the bed but they just didnt look right (I think maybe because the bed is so small?) or maybe because they're just not the right shape or something

ROFL! tessa I didnt even notice that "snow" . looks good doesn't it? It's some cardboard that I put down to smother the grass a while ago so it's kind of broken up and faded and poking out a bit and of course rommie has run off with some of it too. Ok I'll move that top one left. looks like I still have more work to do, or else the rocks are going back to the rock pile :bounce:

I am sure you will work it out Ota, there is never enough or the right size..
Good idea putting cardboard down that way it all helps to recycle.. Very Happy

I like rocks in groups, rather than spaced....and be sure a few are partially submerged into the soil.
That tends to make them look like they have been there for yonks...so they look natural. just my two bits...no offence intended.
In some areas I have placed a few bromeliads in between the gaps in the rocks...just another touch....personal choice.

I like odd numbers of groupings as well unless a pair apart ;)

thanks everyone for the input, I'll try the three together again and see I can get them right that way. They'll be dug in and submerged so they wont look so out there but trying to get the positions right first is hard. 🇳🇴

thee this was the best looking arrangement I could come up with so far, so you think two and one looks ok too?

once they're in I'll pop some plants around them too but Im starting to think the rocks just arent the right shape or something and maybe that's why it's not working. who knew rocks could be so technical Laughing

Either in a group if the bed is wide enough but not in the centre... of to one side. If you want them single like you have, at least one should be off set to the others... a little too straight the way they are... maybe a rough triangle... one towards the back, the next one towards the front and the next closer to the middle... but not exact. It is hard to say though until you can actually see them in place though and what looks good for one person, doesn't look good to another. You will just have to keep moving them until you like the look I'm afraid

I agree with Gail grouped and on the side..

I did not have enough rocks for around my lily pond the other day and the five I put there look awful they need more so Tony asked the neighbour at the back, he has a mowing business and is going to try and get us some for free.. Gee I hope he does..

thanks gail I'll give that a try Smile

how close should they be though? the bed is less than a metre wide, maybe I should be trying to arrange them facing the steps because that's where they'll be seen from the most?

They will always look a little out of place at first until you get a few plantings around them anyway but they will blend in eventually. They would probably look better grouped closely if the bed was wider so I think grouped loosely... anyway, have a look at these, it is a lot easier than moving them around by hand. It will just give you a rough idea what they would look like. They are only very rough ideas so if you want to see the rocks in a different place just say so and I will move them again for you... sorry if I squashed any plants ;)

I can move nearly anything I want Very Happy

Moving those rocks was easy... more or less just cut and paste... I didn't do a real good job of it though

Mary-Anne, I don't think Ota had any more rocks?? Wouldn't want too many more though as it is only a small garden bed.
