It does look nice, but then so do many others in that catalogue. I've ordered Jude the Obscure and Abraham Darby. What did you order, Cheryl?

| Your photo's of Alfred Sisley and Julia's rose are divine, Val. I love the former, and I honestly didn't think stripey roses would be my thing. Must get that one though. But you know, if ever I think of ordering roses, not just buying them locally, one of my dog's or other animals will come up with something that means a huge vet bill, so I can't have my roses. It's Cuddles this time. 12 1/2 year old Cattle Dog girl with a huge (fast growing) tumour or fatty cyst inside her thigh. Booked in for the op. to remove it, if that is possible, next Wednesday. Hopefully the Devil will look after his own and it won't be cancer. | |

| Hopefully Cuddles has just a fatty lump and not a sinister fatty lump.
I like Ashram and might get that one. I love your photos Val although I usually like to see the bush as that is my interest rather than the bloom. I mean if the rose is two foot high or 20 feet, it is a matter of consideration when ordering or if like Crepuscle in another thread, if I show a photo of my verandah with its neat clinging crepuscle, or Mary Anne her archway, one might go out an buy it but if told that it requires hedge trimming reasonably often to achieve that you may or may not wish to buy it.
But then things do not always go according to plan. I had 2 bushes of Julia's rose in my front bed and so many brides to be loved it, so I planted 4 more (actually more but I neglected them and they died in January) and well 3 of those Julia's rose are now up to 7 or 8 feet - much higher than my head - and so I might prune them down over Easter. I do love this rose. It does not strike well at all. It is a funny colour that is divine but does not blend with other pink or yellow roses so in a vase it needs to be with cream or maybe some mauve. I often pick a vase of Julia's rose for my guests but unless I have enough blooms to make a vase just of Julia it is always a quandary what to put with it. But I adore the colour.
Apparently it was named after a famous British florist who used to do arrangements for the queen and this was the florist's favourite rose.
I once visited a garden in an area not far from me that had a very expensive new garden all 'made' and manicured. The only rose - and there must have been 200 of them - was Julia's rose and none of them were in bloom (it was summer) and they did not look very happy in spite of all the $ lavished on them and the owner who showed a small club around was not very happy. There were other highly manicured plants but it was not the garden for me. The wildness of my garden exasperates me as well as pleases me.

| Cheryl, yes please, cuttings of striped roses gratefully received. Did you show a photo somewhere of one that was red and the stripe barely showed? I thought it was beautiful. Don't forget I bought Tropical Sunset, but now I like Val's rose, Alfred Sisley, even more. LOL. Besides, have to please my hubby too, whose favorites are sometimes different to mine. Must admit, Pamela , that I saw Crepescule locally, out of control on a verandah and that put me off a bit. Every time I mention Julia's rose to my sister she tells me it isn't a robust rose, yet every time I see it for sale I am tempted to buy it. Yours obviously love your climate/conditions. Wouldn't you have a similar problem with Lavender Pinnochio, trying to find roses that went well with it in a vase? As for the wildness of your garden... I think if I had your sized garden and that slope, I'd go for something less formal too. | |

| It's funny you should say that about the height of the roses, Pam. I only commented yesterday that all the roses at the Mornington Rose Garden were about the same height, none taller than 1.2 m. I have many of the same roses, and here they are TALL, so it varies with the situation I guess. I sometimes forget to check the height of a rose before I buy it, and get a big surprise when it heads for the sky! I must admit I'd prefer mine to be shorter, they make a better show at close quarters. Oh well, they'll be VERY short at pruning time LOL. | |

| Camille Pissarro is a lovely rose, Val. They all are, but when you put Julia's rose in amongst the other colours she really clashes with them, doesn't she?. I imagine that, in the garden, as well as in a vase, one should choose her position carefully to show her off. Might start planning a spot for her here, and I'll check over in Horsham next time I shop to see if it is still on the shelf where I left it. LOL. Wishful thinking. | |

| I agree about position Betty I had Julia's Rose next to C de G and Camp David, Mauve and Red did not go well at all. Now I have her on the end next to Brass Band, yellow/orange and it looks so much better | |
