Well prompted by Betty and her comment that she hoped it was not too late to register him, I dug out the paper work from where it had sat for 7 months in my very urgent bills to pay now file on the top of my desk. Then the Welsh Pony and Cob Society that will register him said that my application had failed as he was not branded. But the good news that I found out today is that as they have his paperwork from just before he was 12 months, I can still register him. His registered name will be (XXXX Name of my Property xxxx) Lachlan Llewelyn. I thought I could just get the equine vet to come and tomorrow is the travel free day so I was about to arrange it as the vet have their own brand. But just as well I rang the Society. Nooooooo. I have to make up a brand, two brands in fact, that are unique, then go to a blacksmith and have the brands made in metal and then have some trained person come and put the red hot metal on my darling baby's thigh or they can do it by freezing - I have yet to work out how the latter works or who does this.

So - not wanting to enter into months of correspondence, it seems the initials of my property are 'taken' but not if I put a bar under the two initials so that can be one brand on his left side and then on his right side he has to have another brand that indicates his birthdate and number of foals from my extensive 'stud' - so this will be 1/7 as he was the first (and only) foal in 2007.

Any comments Betty and anyone else? Tomorrow I go looking for a metal worker. Any wonder I put off doing this for 18 months! And my poor little yearling Lachie who is sooooo trusting and such a good boy these days. I can even put him on a float now although have not driven off in it yet. How will he ever trust again after we deface him?

Why can't they be content with microchipping?

What a relief, Pamela. Must have caused you a few grey hairs when they said you couldn't register him I'll bet. Thank heaven you didn't go ahead with branding him before you checked with the Society, gasp as of course you must register your own brand first. Wondering if a hot brand wouldn't be best seeing he's a grey. A freeze brand may not show up well on greys. You could check up on that perhaps. Freeze brands stand out very well on bays, chestnuts etc. as they are white.
Unless things have changed drastically, he should be branded on both shoulders, not his thighs. If you think about it, Pamela, if someone was selling me a stud pony I would want to check its brands. I do not want to own a microchip reader just for that odd occassion. With a brand you can just lightly wipe the shoulder with water and the brand becomes readable if it wasn't before. Get an expert and the ordeal is all over in a flash, and with any luck they may bring someone along to hold him while they do it and that way he wouldn't associate you with it. Hey, this is nothing compared to him being gelded. winky-winky

Thanks Betty. Now I understand why his mum's brands are no where to be seen - maybe they were done by freeze branding.

Who are "the experts"? - presumably not a vet???

Microchips can also be removed easily by the unscrupulous. Branding is the last nasty thing that has to be done to him and it will be over in a flash... not nice but it will also give you peace of mind if he is stolen.

Thanks Betty and Gail. It is not an easy solution. Far easier I suspect to breed some puppies as a "one off".

Gelding was no drama at all - his mum 10 metres away eating did not even notice. He was expertly sedated and anaesthetized by the equine vet as I held him on his halter and he was down for exactly 6 minutes and then as I panicked as he was coming to and this enormous instrument was still inside him, the vet said no probs I am finished and I do not stitch as it will heal better and quicker and it did. Now Lachie may not have agreed as he was clearly sore and sorry that evening and the day after but he bounced back so quick.

I will ask if the same vet will do it - will probably cost a bomb but I can select a travel free day at least.

If I want an expert, it wouldn't be a vet, no. LOL. It'd be a stud owner who has branded lots of them, and whose brands stand out clearly. How many would a vet do? It's like dog problems, first I'd ask breeders who've been in the game for 30 years, and then the vet. But don't tell my darling vet that, will you? Laughing
Branding only takes seconds. I know it's not nice but think how many animals have been branded and coped much better with that than some of the other nasty things that seem to befall horses. He will be over it faster than Elle with that wound she had. Did you damp down Kev's shoulder to see if a brand showed up? The hair will be raised over the brand when it's drying. Were her brands on that link you sent me, to her pedigree? Check because then you know what you should be looking for.

Re the gelding op.. I have never known a vet to stitch one up, the wound has to drain. We used to chase them gently around a paddock with a stockwhip to keep them moving and it open. Some get terribly swollen, poor things.

Sometimes the rural life learning curve is more than vertical. How do I find a stud owner who brands .... sigh ....

But sent off the paperwork to register my prefix and brand today. When that is approved then I can go looking for a blacksmith to make it and then a brander.

Why is life so difficult.

All up it is going to cost me at least $500 to register the little darling. Sigh ....

Poverty is owning a horse, or so the bumper sticker says. Aren't there any WM studs near you, Pamela? Doesn't have to be WM, any pony stud owner should know someone who could help you with the branding. Hope you find a good blacksmith to make it too. You need it nice and flat and even so it doesn't cut deeper anywhere.

Pamela, I missed explaining something. If you can find an obliging stud owner up there then they should be able to loan you the number brands, rather than you having them made up especially. What area are you in exactly? I could look up the studs in my Journal and see if there are any close by.

oh it all sounds a bit barbaric...but i can't think of another way to do it as i doubt a horse would stay put for tatooing. somehow, tho, our german sheppard puppy did.

Do you mean tattooing in the ear? I think for speying they use a standard tattoo, don't they? More a punch than tattooing as you'd do it on a person. Don't know about GSDs though. With my first registered ACD bitch, when she was knocked out for some reason, maybe speying, I got the vet to tattoo Ian's initials on the inside of her thigh. It was as easy to read when she died as the day it was done.
As for ponies though, in the time it takes you to say "Sssssst" the branding is done. It's not really like branding cows where they lean on the brand and have smoke billowing, like in the Westerns. One day they'll ban it no doubt, like they did the docking of horse's tails.
