| I have planted 3 climbers (Crepuscles) some months back & am hoping to train them up my verandah posts & then to grow along a wire support (approx 15cms down from verandah rooftop) ....my question is this .....the roses (one in particular have gone crazy & sending off shoots everywhere ....what is the best method of training them upwards & should I be cutting some of the cross growing shoots off as I'd like to have the roses grow around the posts before shooting off along the wire higher above.... am I asking the impossible here?? | |

Crepuscle will not in my experience, put out just a couple of the long climbing canes that you want. It will climb but it does put out masses of canes in all directions.
Look at this crep allowed to grow the way it wants - it is over 6 feet high with a spread of 3 metres. http://rosesetcetera.blogspot.com/
Yet the Help Me Find site says it is Climbing, well-branched. Height of 6' to 12' (185 to 365 cm). Width of 5' to 10' . (150 to 305 cm).
I grow 4 creps on my front verandah very successfully but it has taken 4 years to say this and to get enough long canes so that it covers my rails. I "shave" each side of the verandah every 2-3 months, regardless of the season. These few long canes are thick old wood and from them spring a zillion shoots. I am doing a wedding on Saturday and the bride wants the reception flowers to be apricot so I shaved the creps 8 weeks ago (with a hedge trimmer) and fed them Sudden Impact and so this week there are a couple of hundred red shoots about 2-3 feet long sticking out like a spikey haircut and enough have buds on the end that I pray will open by Saturday.
Cheryl's advice is correct for a climber but Crep is not really like other climbers. If you want it to make this shape it will and it is a great choice. But you will have to be patient. I would buy a small hedge trimmer and shave it whenever you want as well as encouraging it to climb up by tying some of the vertical ones. The more you shave it the more beautiful red shoots and flowers you will get 8 weeks later. I love the shape of my plant now as it is kind of espaliered (but it has taken 4 years). It lets me look through the rose from my living room but it offers me privacy (I have no curtains or blinds and wall to wall windows).

| Glad to wrote all that Pamela and I agree with everything you wrote.. I have it on a arch its grows in full shade here most of the year and still preforms very well Tony shaves it with the electric hedge trimmers to about 30 cms all over often.. | |

| Patricia - here is a copy of a thread reply by me on our old forum - wish they'd bloom like that now as I need them for Saturday but it is close ... Thread - a fourteen metre "vase" of Crepuscle This summer the rose Crepuscle on my front verandah is good. Now 4 years old but haven't done anything to it - I don't bother feeding it as its roots are under the house - there are actually 4 bushes but in winter I might remove one as the rose is such a large one. My verandah rail is only a metre from my wall of windows because of the solar passive design so that winter sun can come in but it means I live with the blossoms almost in my living room and I do love it. No need to fill a vase with flowers. It also means I can sit in the part of my verandah where it widens without being noticed by people in my front garden or if noticed, at least it is slightly more private for us all. Soon they will all be dead and the rose will get a shave and then get ready for another display about Christmas. | |

| Absolutely beautiful, Pamela. I bought Crepescule as a bush recently, and when Sue said bush, I replied that it's a climber. She said not this one, it must be grafted. Can't wait to see how it behaves. Has anyone seen it done before? | |

I think there is only one crepuscle and it is a large bush or it is a climber - depends on your 'definition'. Many roses have a bush form and a climbing form but I am not aware of crep having both. Maybe someone else knows more?

| Pamela if my creps ended up looking & growing on the verandah railing just as yours do I would be over the moon.....absolutely beautiful......still haven't had time to attack mine but have it on the "to do" list along with hundreds of others jobs....not all gardening either. Thanks for sharing | |
