Lavender Pinnochio

I just love the ruffled petals of Lavender Pinnochio so much, and the colour of course, that I didn't realise it was a fragrant rose until I read that in a book. It was worth buying for the look of it, tomorrow I shall see what the perfume is like.

I love ruffled petals. That's lovely.

Mine is not good as it was overtaken by a rampant pumpkin - must attack the pumpkin today.

Lorraine, the flower colour seems to vary a lot just on this bush. It does start off as a brown bud and go through that lavender stage but changes to this pink. If it is a stronger pink than yours it may just be different conditions effecting it. More shade for instance. I'd really like to blame the camera, believe me, because there are so many pinks and reds it won't pick up properly, but for once it is spot on. However, this is the same rose before it goes that pink, tag still attached.



Val, when I decided to start growing roses - not that long ago - I thought I'd be opting for the HT's, but it isn't working out that way seeing I can't go past a flooffy rose. Like, I really want Makybe Diva, Radox Bouquet, Peace and so many others, but if there is something ruffled or old world I just gotta have it. LOL. I love singles too.

Betty, I have got Radox Bouquet, and it's a show stopper. The blooms are so pretty and the fragrance is a knockout. It has grown taller than me !! (Warning) LOL

Sounds like a must have, Val. It looks extremely nice in my rose book. Could be a stepladder job just to deadhead it, but that's okay, most of my Callistemons are way over my head too.

IF You love ruffles, you will fall in love with Madame Gregoire Stachelin - a true climber. Blooms only once a year but I look forward to it all year. I am not alone in my view on the Spanish Beauty. Susan Irvine planted a number of them all around one house she wrote about and it is on the cover of one of her books. It is a people stopper.

Oh, I think I can almost smell that Crimson Glory, Pamela. As for the other, my sister frowns on me planting anything that only flowers once. (She has Birthday Present and wouldn't give me a cutting because it's like that too, more's the pity.) It looks lovely though, also in my book here.

Would you not enjoy a sunset because it happens only once in 24 hours? Once flowering roses can be spectacular and I love the special ones like the Madame who are divine as I look forward to her show every year. As you walk from the car parking area to my front door the perfume is sensational and even I can smell it a bit (I lost my sense of smell from a brain haemorrhage). Alberic Barbiere is another special once a year flowering rose that I am trying to get and will order bare rooted - spectacular. You can have all your "next fashion insert celebrity name here" grows to only a metre hybrid tea with a couple of "perfect" blooms at at time. Give me a REAL rose with hundreds and hundreds of blooms and a fragrance that wafts over the garden.

I think you are right, Pamela. I will have to convince my sister that I can live with once flowering roses so she will give me one I want off her. LOL. Alberic Barbiere is a beauty, ditto your other pink one, but the one she has is a gorgeous deep blacky red.

I have to look for Mme Gregoire Staechelin, Pamela. I just looked at some rose magazines my sister sent up and there is a photo of her there in all her glory. Front cover of the Your Garden , Special Issue- Success with roses, Spring 2002. A beautiful rose indeed. I don't need every rose blooming all the time, she forgets that I have had nothing at all much in my garden for years. So, you've sold me on it.

You will love the Madame. She also has the most exquisite pear shaped hips and my bush must have had a more than a hundred hips and some are still on teh bush - from October flowering.

I am not as good as I'd like to be with cuttings. My box method was not so good as it got too humid in there - maybe I watered too much. I just get sooooo busy running this business Betty that everything suffers but I put the animals first, after the business, and so the garden often suffers.

I am back to the cut off end of a drink bottle over the cutting in the little pot and I have one lovely Apple Blossom Clematis cutting that is looking good which I want as the back of my place is yellow roses and some climbers but teh native white clematis there is too big for the site so I want to dig it out and replace with another Apple Blossom one.

Maybe ... I will try some rose cuttings. Sigh ...... Your "maybe Dark Lady" is still happy - will dig her up and post whenever you wish.

If you think the Dark Lady is up to travelling and transplanting, we do have rain forecast for next Friday and Saturday I think, Pamela. What do you think, plant before or after the rain? How about, in return, I get you a Vanguard for your garden? Don't ask me when they'll be ready, I keep pestering the nursery people but he hasn't even taken cuttings yet.
All I've done for this first lot of cuttings is potted them and put them up against the east side of the house so they are protected from frost and getting morning sun. I suppose they should have more protection but I don't know how to tackle it when it is so many pots. It's better care anyway than my first lot got and some survived. The cut off end of big milk cartons would be worth at a try. You can't beat soft drink bottles over vegie seedlings I found.

I hope you get that rain! I think it is stilll too warm here to dig her up - I think I'd like to wait a month or so.

I do not need a rose in exchange ... but I will watch the Vanguard progress at your place.

For the first time in 6 years I now have a little table in my courtyard where I can put cuttings as that place gets just a little sun and also gets full rain on it and it is only once in a blue moon I have to clear everything out of the courtyard to use it as a stable such as when Elle has one of her injuries. The table is great as it means Sam can't chew the pots. There has been so much to do in building this garden and business that a lot of things I wanted had to wait. One day I will get a clothes line instead of the bit of string stretched across my walkway and which I have to take down if I want to walk up to feed the horses. My courtyard is the only 'non public' place on my property and it is great now that I no longer need it as a shelter for the horses in rain so maybe my cuttings will do better this winter.

Your post has just reminded me, Pamela, that I only watered about 80% of my cuttings this morning, must finish the job later. They are actually getting dappled shade because I deliberately didn't remove a long row of shrivelled tomato plants that had been on that side of the house, set up in a florida weave.

You are lucky to have that courtyard area for Elle and the others(cleaning stables is just more work, sigh.). I think our stables were the first thing we built here, but back then Ian was showing his hackney gelding and getting him up in time for the Royal and Spring shows was a lot of work. Not a paddock job. Dog yards were next , after I swapped to showing dogs. They aren't flash but they've stood the test of time. Haven't been blown down by our 100klm an hour gales yet, though we did lose part of a stable roof once.LOL. I know it all takes time to get what you want but you will get there eventually. I now want rose arbours, and as luck has it there are instructions in the magazine Barb sent to me, I reckon I could do it myself. Better luck this year with keeping your courtyard clear for the gardening to go ahead, must have been so frustrating when Elle had to take priority.

Elle's last injury was about 6 weeks ago and the bale of straw and manure are still in there - I just have not had time to clean it - but I have a large Otto bin and on my 'priority list' is to fork all that into the Otto bin to take up for carbon in my new compost bin (I just did the free compost course here and got a fancy new compost bin and a lovely food scraps bin for the kitchen from Council free of charge). Everything takes sooooo long. I have had guests checking in and out every alternate day for the last 14 days and the clear day I have to spend driving around delivering and picking up laundry and more food. It is nice to be successful but it is just so much hard work. I need it to be successful as I just had a fancy new stainless steel outdoor kitchen (ILVE gas cooktop with volcanic rock BBQ, dishwasher, frig, sink etc) installed - with many problems but I am resolving them ... sigh - for my guests and not for me.

Tomorrow after my riding lesson at the crack of dawn - if it does not rain too hard overnight - I am hoping for a few hours in the garden. Please....

Sounds as if you are flat out up there, Pamela. Wish I was a neighbor so I could pop in and help out.That new outdoor kitchen sounds great, how about showing us a photo?
How did the riding lesson go, was it wet? Why do you have it at the crack of dawn, does your teacher have a 9 to 5 job? It'd be nice to ride then I reckon, and if you have a teacher willing to come to you, instead of you going to her, how good is that!?

It's going well - the lessons that is. Elle is a darling mostly. I have a strap around her chest (an old stirrup leather) and I hold that and the reins with my inside hand (and jsut the reins with my outside hand so I can vibrate it to keep telling her to go slowly) and holding the strap steadies my hand and also I can stop her with it so it is a security blanket to me. We are now trotting and I can trot a number of times around the arena before I am breathless. If I use the strap to ensure that when she starts in trot she does not race off, it goes well. She wants to race all the time and is so forward moving it is not funny. I only have to think trot and off she goes. But I also only have to think stop and she does that also. She really does try to please and she is coping better with me now that I am more balanced and also not moving the reins so much and she sometimes now puts her head down and goes onto the bit. I am now learning leg yeilding as I have to use my inside leg all the time to keep her on the track. Wonderful instructor and I feel very spoilt. I looooooooove it. I hope Elle does.

I'm sure if Elle wasn't enjoying your lessons, she would let you know, Pamela, horses have a tendency to do that. She's probably a nice kind mare that won't cause any trouble and once you really trust her and have your confidence in her, you'll look back and wonder why you worried in any way. Pity she's not a little less enthusiastic while you are getting used to her though.
