PostSubject: our river cruise   Wed Apr 22, 2009 6:56 pm

i forgot to post our river cruise piccies!
duh

anyway...a few quick ones...

here's the boat we went out on

a view of the city as we pulled away.
the pointy building in the foreground is the bell tower. it isn't as big as it appears....just closer.
perth has built its CBD with its back to the river....so it's not as close as the belltower is.

and the winery that we visited. this is the cellar, which is the oldest cellar in perth.
apparantly...folks were height challenged back in the day.

i still have not been able to find a store that sells their wine. i will have to go back there...because strewth mate...water's edge merlot cab was the finest wine i've had since coming here. sooooo oaky.

I bet you had a great time, keep looking someone is sure to sell that wine..
Is there a reason why they built the buildings that way in the CBD, and do you know why Question

Yes people were a little shorter in the 17th and 18th Centuries, Tony told me that he knew of a house in Wales where they ripped up the floorboards and dug down as they could not make the doorway higher, makes me glad I am short sometimes..

no idea why they built the city that way, mary-anne.
western australians are a weird lot.
i heard on the radio today about the uproar that the grocery stores are about to introduce unit pricing. you know...so we can see what really is the cheaper brand or source.
what?...they say.
how much are we supposed to spend on gas going from store to store?...they ask.
as tho they are being forced to shop in several stores just because one store has something on cheaper than another.

Tessa we got unit pricing here last year and it does not make any difference to the way we shop, we would not think of going to several Supermarkets to see what was the cheapest and I agree it's just a waste of petrol..

Sounds like you had a great day Tessa. Perth always looks to be such a 'clean' city and even though that room is low, I love those old buildings.

Unit pricing isn't aimed as much about comparing prices between stores but between brands especially when one brand is 120g and another brand is 140g for example... saves me digging the calculator out and saves a lot of time.

exactly, gail.
but try explaining that to the people who think that daylight savings time will peel the paint on their houses and make their grass grow quicker.

heaven knows what their reason was for making the CBD completely ignore the river...but i'm sure it was a doozy!

Well one learns something every day. I had never thought of Perth being built to ignore the river, but I do know the river was closer, before they did a lot of filling many years ago. Won't be voting for DS either... Smile

What winery was that Tessa?

I'm going to Darwin in November but I would like to see Perth too. My sister who has been to W.A. is very keen on the Margaret River area.

Marlene The "BUILD UP" is the time of year when everyone had 3 months of humidity build up
and looking at the clouds build up every day only to drift away , this happens every day until the lightening and thunder storms start which could start anytime from the end of November till a late wet season start in January. AT NIGHT THE TEMP DOES NOT DROP MUCH OR THE HUMIDITY.
ITS FULL ON AIR.CON.
Air con, house , car ,bus , office, school, all shopping centers etc, etc.
But thats your choice , maybe you'd like those climate conditions.

Thats why you got a special deal Marlene October to December is the worst time to visit there as Gwen wrote.

Its also the time of the year when people go off their heads and do strange things because of the weather and I was shocked to find when I lived in Townsville how many people came there to get away from Darwin at that time..We visited Darwin one May and even then it was a little uncomfortable, but its was a good time for the barra fishing and that's what I was after.

Darwin in Mid Winter would be ideal I should imagine..
