Probably asking the impossible but any suggestions for a low growing plant that flowers in winter in Qld? I'm looking for something that grows up to around half a metre, will handle nearly full sun in summer and part sun in the middle of winter (faces SE) - either groundcover or perennial shrub. Mainly want it to flower, or at least look good, from Jan/Feb to around Aug/Sept. Tough annuals or biennials like petunias and salvias would work but prefer something that lasts a bit longer and comes back every winter rather than flower off and on all year.
We are moving the daylilies and just want something to grow between them that looks good when the daylilies don't - prefer not to have other flowers when the dayliles are flowering. Doesn't have to be just one type of plant, several different ones are ok.
One suggestion I've thought of is kniphofia but have never grown them before so not sure how big they grow - I know there is a dwarf variety but is it under half a metre?
