Here's a pic of one of the vegie beds and some pears ready to pick. Also a feral pumpkin which grew from compost I'd put on the rose bed. It's marching across the lawn and has 2 pumpkins so far. I've never grown them before and I'm the only one here that eats them. So............pumpkin soup could be on the menu soon Smile

i've got about 20 on my tree...and none of them ripening yet.
brought a few in to see if they'd ripen.
so far, they haven't.

These pears will be picked this week. I put them in a box with a ripe banana and they ripen that way. If they are left on the tree too long the possums or birds would get them. According to Sir Pete they are ready to pick when they come off easily when lifted upwards.
I've already had 4 pears of a different variety off this tree, it was a multi graft. They looked like Josephines. The ones in the pic are Packhams I think. This tree was already here when we moved in, so it's a bit of guess work.

Well I picked the pears - what whoppers!
10 of them weigh nearly 4kg and 1 weighs 600g
Val's Vegies & Fruit DSCF2524-1
Val's Vegies & Fruit DSCF2527-1

They came of the tree really easily when lifted up.
Now I've got to decide what to do with them. Could be all peared out if I'm not careful!

Thanks all.
MA, I have a bottling outfit, so probably will use it for some of these babies. I bottle our plums, cherries and nectarines.
It would be nice to see all the bottles on the shelf in the pantry, but they recommend keeping them in a dark place. Our pantry is a walk-in one with a big sky light - not dark! So I have to hide the bottles in cupboards and low shelves.
Richard, they are like rocks at the moment. I have to ripen them by keeping them in a box with ripe bananas in a dark cupboard!

to bad you can't get brown glass bottles...then you could keep them out in the open.

val...great harvest! i will show you mine soon.

i reckon nothing bottles better than pears...so those will be nice to have in the dead of winter.

Wouldn't dark or painted jars defeat the purpose of having the bottled fruit on display? Preserves of any sort are supposed to be kept in a dark place.
