| I am so envious. I only have lettuce and spinach and some cukes ATM ... and loads of pumpkin. And sweet potato. I am rapidly learning that I cannot grow
bog sage sweet potato pumpkin
As tehy go totally out of control!!!!!!!! The sweet spud planted a few months ago is choking the roses and is covering an enormous area - plan to pull out this week and will photograph - maybe I can find a hill somewhere to stick them and let them multiply up there to their heart's content - as long as they can live with horses

| pamela...don't forget you can eat the leaves...so when you pull up those sweet potato vines...cook 'em up!
essentially....you just boil the leaves, but not the vines. the leaf stem is incredibly tender...so don't cut those off. boil for a little bit...pour off the water, refill and then boil to the consistency you like (this is because some, but not all folks, think there is a chemical released that you don't want to eat. i've done it that way, but also have just boiled and eaten and lived to tell the story) i like the greens totally over-cooked. they are better, i think, than english spinach. just as a point of information: you can also find them for sale in asian food markets.

| Ota, PM me your address. They are easy to grow, I've had them coming up by themselves from old fruit that have dropped. Probably not much use in planting until spring now but the seeds keep ok.
Sweet potato is considered a weed in some areas up here and there are warnings about planting them near susceptible areas.
The pumpkin hasn't got any powdery mildew... yet... only been in a couple of months growing... I was hoping to get some fruit before winter but probably pushing my luck. I don't usually have too much trouble with mildew until the plants are getting old... even then it doesn't worry them, they still keep growing... and I don't spray anything. They are always planted out in full sun with plenty of air flow around them and I rarely water the pumpkin vines. This one has gone ballistic as the seeds were planted about 4m away from this area in the pics.

| that's the thing, cheryl. sweet potatoes are a wonder food...cheap, easy, prolific. it is all about corporate greed and how the corporate world hobbles the farmers. don't get me started...but it's a lot like australia saying it's got no water...and yet it is *surrounded* by it. it's all what you're being taught...rightly or wrongly so. | |

| I know you can Tessa but I like them best when they are fully ripe and full of flavour. I find them a bit tasteless otherwise though will eat them | |

I cant see how you could tell Richard.. If you cut it and put in the fridge I wrap mine in white paper towels it does not mature after its been cut.. And you would not know how mature it was till you cut into it.. I cannot eat a Kent pumpkin if its a real dark orange I prefer the dark yellow or lighter orange colour Guess thats why I like the grey pumpkin better they mature to the lighter colour that my taste buds can handle..
