PostSubject: my little girl is going for surgery   my little girl is going for surgery Icon_minitimeThu May 21, 2009 3:23 pm

Im like a mother hen right now, my little rommie bear is going for her sterilisation tomorrow and she was also born with a hernia on her belly button so they're going to fix that as well. Im so nervous! I dont even want to take her in Sad

Please think good thoughts for her, I know Im probably over reacting but all my previous dogs were sterilised before I got them and I never realised what a big surgery this is before, silly me always though they tied their tubes or something I didnt know until recently they take the whole lot out. Embarassed

I cant wait till this is over and she's home again, poor little bear. I hope I can sleep tonight! prayer

Been there, done that several times. It is always hard to see and they can't understand what's happening but they are home before you know it and only quiet for a day or two before they are back to their old self... the hard part is keeping them quiet until the stitches are out duh I've always hated the nil by mouth beforehand when they are sitting there watching you and wondering why they can't have anything to eat or drink... those eyes... Sad

thanks maryanne and thee. gail, so she will only be sore for a couple of days you think? I've been dreading how to keep her quiet and stop her from digging until the stitches are out, Im so worried the cuts will get all dirty and infected because she'll dig a hole and climb right inside and start rolling around in there. Im glad it's being done on a friday though so I can keep a close eye on her and make sure she's comfy over the weekend.

The first day or two she will be quiet. You may have to keep her inside as much as possible or keep her on a leash until the cuts heals... at least they heal quick. My dogs weren't diggers so I didn't have that problem but they loved swimming though it was easy to keep them away from the dam.

I think youre right, looks like I'll have to keep her in and take her out on a leash. Ive never had a digger before her, but aparently some of her relatives are also very keen diggers so it seems to run in her family. It's one of her favourite things in the world and it's not because she's bored, she just loves doing it duh

Problems with dogs is they want to lick all the time and the more they lick they seem to infect the cut or rip the jolly stitches out... As Gail stated keep her in a few days maybe more, and if you can get one of those plastic collar things that look like a bucket get it, believe me it will be worth it as it will stop her licking.. And Rommie will be fine so dont you go worrying too much.

good idea maryanne, I'll ask the vet to give us one of those collars (hopefully I'll remember!) even if we dont use it they probably dont cost that much but it'll be handy to have if we need it thumbs-up

thanks ma, I'll try not to worry too much as you say. Im just going to have to keep busy tomorrow and not think about it Sad

Ota, I don't blame you for worrying. I've never had a dog even lick its stitches, but a Dobe my sister sold tore its stitches out twice and she ended up with peritonitis and had to be put down. Shattering for her owner. The Elizabethan collar is a good idea just in case. I think if your vet gives her pain medication she should cope. Do confine her though, getting the suture line dirty digging is the last thing you want. People often think they can get away with less than sterile conditions for a dog but a Great Dane breeder we know had two Danes fight at a show and do you know what her mistake was? She picked up a towel to staunch the bleeding on a wound, the towel wasn't clean and she ended up with a very sick dog and a massive vet bill. Anyway, for mine it is really clean bedding until the wound is healed, only lead exercise, and if, towards the time for the stitches to come out, the suture line gets itchy, I cut open a Vit E capsule and just drizzle it along the stitches. Forget who gave me that tip but it's a goodun. Not always necessary but soothing. Good luck, I'll be thinking of Rommie.

thanks thee, she's heading out to the breeders vet now with DH, I couldnt bring myself to go in case I changed my mind. she was looking a bit confused about the whole thing,so I gave her big cuddle and told her to think happy thoughts I love you

thanks for the advice betty. these are the things that worry me because she is such a little grub. I almost wish I could put a little sterile body suit on her. Ive changed her bedding so i'll go around and put some clean covers in some of the other places she likes to lie down. Her spare bedding is in the laundry so I'll get that washed today too. How often should I change her bedding until it heals? she only has two sets of bedding so if i need to change it every day I might have to cut up some sheets or something for bed covers Question maybe I should get some betadine and put some on everyday? after hearing those stories Im going to keep her inside and take her out on a lead. It'll be a bit of nuisance having the door shut because my other dog and cat wont be able to go in and out when they want so I'll just have to do doorman duty for a while

I can imagine how heartbroken the dobe owner must have been, what a terrible thing to happen after going through the surgery and everything Sad

Ota, the best thing would be to ask the vet about Betadine and similar. Also stitches should be kept dry especially the first few days. The wound should look dry and a healthy pink colour without any discharge.

Try not to worry about it too much as she will pick up on that as well and could become stressed, also best if her routine stays as close to normal as possible... and don't molly coddle her too much or, if she is the cunning type winky-winky she will take advantage of that. Just remember 99% of dogs don't have a problem, use commonsense and you shouldn't have a problem so make yourself a cuppa, relax and think positive thoughts flower

well she's home again and it sounds like everything went ok cheers
what a stressful drive out into the sticks. amazing how much traffic you have to get through to get there and back though. rommie was staring at me the whole time with one eye shut and one eye open LOL

she's very groggy still but Ive got her settled down in her bed in the lounge room and she's snoring her little head off at the moment. so glad to have her home again. thumbs-up
