| I had a lovely surprise discovering this pink hyacinth coming into flower. It was part of a potted gift that my SIL gave me in 2007.....am amazed that it re-flowered (this year) in our temperate climate. This next flower is a vine (Kennedia nigricans) which is 'pruned' on a regular basis by Mr. Possum..the flower looks black but is actually a deep purple with a yellow flash. It is a relatively new plant in my garden..since last year, from memory. Finally this poor plant has waited for years to be put in the garden...I couldn't decide where to place it...Scadoxus puniceus...not fully open as yet..... Spring is knocking on the door, me thinks. | |

| All a little different and so pretty.
We did buy a scadoxus end of last year but it died down over winter and hasn't started to return yet so may have lost it.

I've always called them GENUS Haemanthus multiflorus , but its changed now to Scadoxus multiflorus , there is also a white one called Scadoxus albaflorus.

| Hi Gwen, I would NOT be surprised if the name is incorrect...when I bought it, the plant was incorrectly labelled. When mine opens fully I shall take another photo. | |

| I did some searching to find the original tag for my Scadoxus puniceus and sure eniough it was incorrectly labelled Haemanthus coccineus. Mine has a different leaf..it is a largish, more upright, slightly wavy and wide.
A lovely friend gave me a Haemanthus coccineus and a Haemanthus albiflos in 2007, neither of which have flowered yet. I may move the pots and see what happens.

| I have mine growing in the garden and this last week the scrub fowld have unearthed a few. Faye keeps covering them back up, at least the scrub fowls are not eating them like the bandicoots. I can't have a lot of plants in pots as Faye has the watering job. I keep only plants in pots that are waiting to be grown up enough to plant out.Years ago I had so many pots but Iwas able to look after them . | |

| Ray I think you are refering to the evergreen types of Scadoxus .The one I have in the dormant type from the wet parts of Africa . mine is Scandoxus multiflorus ...Scadoxus albiflos is a white flowering evergreen.
http://www.plantzafrica.com/planthij/haemanalbif.htm
According to reports I read Haemanthus is now an invalid synonom, and sp. coccineus meaning red is also outdated ,multiflorus replaced it ,So I think mine should be called Scadoxus multiflorus
Its a very interesting study but very hard to get correct up to date research results . Thank you for your interest Ray.

| Hi Pitta,my understanding of is that some of the Haemanthus have become Scadoxus but not all of them and Haemanthus is still a valid genus. The place I go to to get valid names for bulbs is The Kew Gardens. No doubt as botantist's chop and change there is always going to be debate over which is the correct name, an as gardeners, is something we have to live with.Maybe in 50 years all plants will be known by a DNA number! bye Ray | |
