PostSubject: On my windowsill this week   Thu Jan 07, 2010 1:36 pm

It continues to be unusually cold here in North Carolina
but, inside the glasshouse the weather is just fine,
as a result I was able to choose a few things to bring into the front room.

(please excuse the strange lighting in these pictures)

This is BLC Husky Boy 'Romeo' - This one is actually blooming rather early, I'm accustomed to watching for it to flower around the middle of February - but I'm not complaining.

I don't know the name of this Phalaenopsis - it's so ugly that I can't help loving it - as my husband would say "That thing's got ugly that it hasn't even used yet."

Much more elegant is this one - Dtps Minho Princess 'Flying'

And finally, this NOID Cattleya

If I don't step outside, I could almost fool myself into believing it's summer in my part of the world, too.

WOW! Very nice, Ellie. Like Fay I am green with envy. My place is where orchids come to die unfortunately.

Beautiful orchids, Ellie. I love 'em all!
I'm a serial orchid killer so I have to admire other people's orchids!

Gracious thanks, ladies.

I have to admit that I have sent my fair share of orchids to the
"great beyond" -
I wonder if my job in eternity will be caring for them??

Aw, thank you Mary-Anne.
Oh, how very well I understand about starting off shopping for one plant and ending up with something different, altogether.

I'm guessing, but my first impression seeing the photo of your pink beauty is that this is probably one of the many named cultivars of Laelia anceps - although, of course, it could be a cross (such as Laeliocattlea).

There is a gallery here:
http://www.sborchid.com/plantdisplay.php?ocode=CLA229
(scroll down to see more pics)
which contains some that bear a resemblance to yours - no exact matches, that I noticed.

So Much Ellie thumb2

Yes well I can usually buy a Orchid at any time but it is not often I see a Nepenthes sabre in those markets or any Nepenthes for that matter.. scratch

My Orchid is almost a twin to the Laelia anceps 'SanBar Flash'

I will call it Laelia anceps cultivar....
What can I say except you certainly know your Orchids and once again Thank you for that ID I googled for many hours when I first bought it last year with no luck at all, I so appreciate your replying.. I have now written its name in my paper Garden book.

That's a pretty pink one, Mary-Anne. You know, now that roses are out of season, I could buy orchids instead, I know they have a good selection where I buy my roses. BUT, surely I could kill them faster buying them in Summer? scratch

My pleasure Mary-Anne, I'm glad that you feel we found the right family for your pretty orchid. That's more important than the cultivar name, anyway, yes? Especially if there are ever any care questions.

I have quite a few orchids with no specific ID, some that came from my mother's collection. She felt that the tags were ugly, so she would promptly remove them and throw them away.
She lived in FL, so orchids were affordable and easily available to her (not so much the case for me, here). All of her plants lived (or died) outdoors year 'round, and she gave little thought to "recommended care" instructions - she stuck her plants where she wanted them to grow, fertilized them occasionally and let nature and the sprinkler system do the rest. If one croaked, she simply regarded it as a shopping opportunity.
