| Did a dash to town yesterday so as not to miss having first pick of the first bare rooted roses for the season. Came home with 3 David Austin's, (Happy Child, William Shakespeare 2000 and Graham Thomas), also Mister Lincoln, and for the trellis outside the kitchen window, Pierre de Ronsard. The next lot of roses should hopefully be in by the next time I have to shop. | |

| I'll be very disappointed if we don't get some, Gwen. Next Summer is what bothers me. I'll have to rig up some shade somehow if we get it as hot as last Summer. | |

| Fantastic choices there Betty... I have a Graham Thomas new last year as Yellow and Orange are my favourite rose colours.. It is a tall rose that one with very long arching canes so give it plenty of room you probably know all that anyway.. I had to tie mine up to a tall stake now I am pruning it by half every time its get on the move I dont have the space for something that big in that spot Graham Thomas: Pierre de Ronsard another tall one it will look great on a trellis and what a perfect sight from your window I was always going to buy that one but never did, here's hoping Betty the weather does not get too hot like last year. Never seen Happy Child before so I googled very nice another beautiful yellow one.. I do know the other two but have never grown them .. I will be looking forward to seeing pics of your William Shakespeare 2000 as I have never seen a decent photo of that yet on a gardening forum and you take such lovely photo's.. | |

| Magnificent photo, Mary-Anne. Graham Thomas will have some room but I may need to rig up a trellis just for him perhaps? Maybe I should shift him somewhere better before he gets settled? Where Pierre de Ronsard is it will have some afternoon shade and protection from the hot winds but honestly, if we get 47C again next Summer nothing will be safe. Actually, it's only rarely that my camera will give me a decent shot of a red or dark pink rose. I don't know why it can't cope with the colour. I'll try though. I have a Papa Meilland rose inside - the scent is divine - and I just can't get a good photo of it. | |

| Thanks Betty, Graham Thomas does need some kind of support I got Tony to put a frame up but it was not the right thing, so back to tying it to a tall stake and I am keeping it pruned to about 150 cms I can manage that height tied up, if you want it to hang loose it may be a good idea to move it where it will have plenty of room both sides or all round it as the canes grow to about 240 cms.. Now that is here in Qld and we have had a lot of rain this year, it could act different in your climate being colder or dryer. Have a read of this link http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg051946318749.html?11 USA Gardenweb it also mentioned your WS2000. I have the same problem with purpley red flowers they dont photograph well either, crimson red does though.. | |

| That's a beautiful of Graham Thomas, MA. You've caught the richness of the gold well. I've got him climbing an arbour, but he's gone past the top and is reaching for the sky! My camera doesn't do reds well either - very frustrating! Here's my William Shakespeare 2000 but the red is really deeper. | |

| Couldn't Graham Thomas be pruned back to just a big bush? I just read the posts at that link you gave me, Mary-Anne, and seems that people prune it hard. Val, is WS2000 the red of that bud in the lower left hand corner of your photo? It's blooming beautifully for you and such big flowers, very impressive. You must be doing a whole lot right in your care of your roses. | |

| Well, the roses weren't in at that Nursery where I bought the first 5, but they were at K Mart. I picked out two stripey roses, Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, and also the lovely cream rose, Elina. The other nursery will ring me when theirs come in and tell me what's amongst them, and I can tell them which ones I'd like them to put aside for me. Good news though, I was told there's a guy who takes really good roses to a local market, which I've never been to, though it looks like I should attend the next one, doesn't it? I might give him a ring first and see what he has. Too many temptations at a market I reckon. | |

This is a better idea of the colour Betty, in bright sunlight the colour gets washed out. | |

| I love those Graham Thomas Mary-Anne. Christmas is approaching and a bunch of Graham Thomas would be a great gift for someone close to our hearts.
