A Cassia at Roma St Parklands

Not a great photo because we only had the phone with us, I forgot the camera.

Someone suggested it may be brewsterii but the colour seems wrong. The photo is a bit misleading it's actually a mix of several colours when you see it up close. There was an avenue of them, in the park, along the road between the park and the apartments behind it.

I think I've found the answer. It could be a Rainbow Shower Tree, the colours are variable.

It would be a pretty tree all the Cassia's are..

I thought it might have been Koelreuteria paniculata, Golden Rain Tree, as they are looking like that around here now and are common in Brisbane too. They flower with long racemes of golden yellow flowers in January & February, and in March and April they are covered in seed pods with pink bracts so looks to be a totally different tree to what flowered.

Is that a No No tree here Gail or just South of the Border..

Not sure Mary-Anne. I know it is in some areas, there is also another one that is considered a weed but not sure which ones are which when seen from from a distance.

There are quite a few around Gympie and are easy to find at the moment covered in those pink bracts... I would have passed at least 20 in various gardens this morning when I was in town.

No, it's definately a cassia. I know those other nasty self seeding blighters all too well.

Thought you should have known the Koelreuteria as it is so common.

It wouldn't be cassia javanica would it? Not sure when they flower without looking it up.

I like the pink cassias but can't stand the weedy yellow ones that come up everywhere around here... forever pulling them out

I should have tried for a close up. The flowers were actually a mix of a few different colours, it's just the photo that makes it look pink. It had yellow, pink and a salmony orange from memory.

It's a shame the Roma St parkland website is down at the moment... it is a good website when it is working. There is an email address there though so you could try asking them if they know it.

What ever it is, it's a really pretty tree.
