I didn't know it, Mary-Anne, but I had something eating my roses too. When they started dying I thought it was just the real bad heat last Summer, but as I pulled a few dead ones out this morning - and I'm talking cuttings which had got to the flowering stage, with roots - I see where one had slits in the bark and another scrape marks through it, while a third had been well chewed at the top. Don't know what caused the damage, like you, but I suspect cockatoos.
