Ducks in the garden Empty
PostSubject: Ducks in the garden   Ducks in the garden Icon_minitimeFri Dec 25, 2009 5:31 pm

This pair of Pacific Black ducks adopted us and our garden a few weeks ago. They arrived as a pair and stayed all day for a couple of weeks, then the drake came alone all day and the female made quick visits to eat ravenously. This went on for about 3 weeks so we assumed she had laid a clutch of eggs and was hatching them. However, two weeks later and they're both back again so it looks as though she didn't manage to raise her babies for long. There are many many foxes round here, and that's what probably was the end of them Sad
As you can see from the photos we give them water to paddle in and we feed them on duck pellets.

Val how lucky to have these Pacific Black Ducks in your garden. thumb2
I see lots of them down our Lagoon I love that teal coloured feather they have on the side.

How wonderful that you provide them with food as well as their own wading pool I bet they like that.

Thanks for sharing...

We got one pair of Pacific Black Ducks each year on our dam, I assume it's the same pair, and unlike yours, Val, they always seemed feral compared to the Wood ducks. It's lovely to see that trust from a wild bird and great that you look after them so well. Nice photo's.

Thanks folks Smile
No, Fay, they don't earn their keep at all! They sit around all day and have the occasional pondie. They take an amble up the garden to the house when they think it's time for their next snack, which is far too often of course!
