| Faye was calling our garden Frangipini gardens , she said she may have to change that to Ginger forest .. I stated off with 19 gingers.I have 2 getting bigger in pots from MA . Another 1 from Gail getting bigger also, plus I have 3 on order from the lady I got my first lot from of gingers from . MA sent me seeds of another one . Now today the mower people came to mow and the lady who does it brought me 2 gingers in pots. I asked if she knew the names , 1 is a common red one the 2 nd is called walking stick ginger. From my searching the web I cane up with Phoemeria speciosa, another name is Nicolario elatior, another name Etlingera elatior, these 3 names are all refering to the same Torch Ginger, she said its a reddy pinky one [ not a gardener ] I think Marlene has this one. | |

| UPDATE on the ginger name. I EMAILED 2 GINGER GROWERS IN THE USA and got 1 reply saying they have never heard of walkingstick ginger. Then I sent email to Australian Nurseries Online .com .au. got REPLY .yes that is a ginger called Phaeomeria speciosa which is a syn. of your torch ginger MA .Etlingera elatior. I am still confused because the one I was given is spiral in growth ,and the one by the same name MA has is straight growth . So I rang the lady who gave them to me and questioned her about this and she said. "Ill drop the flowers of both in to you tomorrow."I'm thinking the spiral look is only when the plant is very young. Goodbye to | |

| Common Names are so confusing Gwen.. Done a bit of research on Phaeomeria speciosa and Etlingera elatior myself Gwen and they are both seem to be the same plant sometimes they show a pink flower instead of a red one either that or its the older name.. The only Gingers I know that Spiral are the Costus and I have these two Being so much taller the Variegated one look good with its stems spiraling up.. | |

| Yes MA those 2 names are the same plant, in fact I could give you about 5 more , they are all former namers of Etlinger elatior the one you have . the one you just put the labels on are Costus speciosa as you say and I have both too . All will be revealed tomorrow when I get the flowers. I'll get Faye to take pics of the flowers ,plus pics of my new [returned home]Alocasia,

| I like the Costus because they are so easy to grow from cuttings , avoiding all that digging up and dividing of the other types. | |

| The mower lady came in today with 2 flowers, one is Alpinia purputata which I like its such a nice bright red. 2nd one is Tapeinochilos ananassae . the red back scratcher , f unny I 've been trying to get that one for ages as its grows in the Cape . So after all that its not the one I thought , from her describing it to me she sain its like a red Waratah. I'll put pics on later ,Faye is going to do pics for me tomorrow , I want a few plants pics. http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/images/401/magnoliophyta/Liliopsida/Zingiberales/Zingiberaceae/Tapeinochilus_ananassae/ http://www.hear.org/starr/plants/images/species/?q=alpinia+purpurata | |

| Look good I was admiring the Tapeinochilos on this website a while ago but don't think they would handle our winters down here. http://www.elarishtropicalexotics.com/Plant-Browser.aspx BTW, this is a good nursery to buy from, plants are big and healthy, but freight isn't cheap though I think he sells on ebay sometimes. | |

| A lot of gingers don't seem to do well here - too cold in winter and can't give them enough water in summer. | |

| Subject: Invasive weed follow up Tue Jun 02, 2009 9:26 am | |
| As arranged ,today at 9am the local Feral Animals & Weeds crew [ 4 men] arrived in 2 trucks. They did a survey of the Barleris strigosa, took numerous photographs and notes . Then they took samples to send away to various departments. They say the whippering we are doing will get rid of it, as long as its not let go to seed, and the seeds that are dormant in to ground will be taken care of when they appear , with whippering. The plants that have escaped into the bush and cannot be whippered ,will not go into the jungle any further as they cannot survive in the dark, they need some sunlight. They don't have staff to get rid of the plants in the jungle. but have given me a tube [ gel] of a bio degradable poison they have approved for use where spraying is not possible. Its called GRAZON EXTRA and he said its expensive to buy. Its used by wiping the gel over the stump of the plant after you cut the plant low to the ground. The gel will then go right through that plant and kill all its roots ,without any effect to neighbouring vegetation. They were so helpful and said any further problems to call them. My family from adarwin will be here end of Juld so I can cet some workers to do a gel kill. | |
